Our Gosaikunda Lake Trek begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Dhunche. Dhunche is a small village which is about 98.4 kilometers far from the capital city of Nepal. This is the starting point of the Gosaikunda Lake Trek and is a very beautiful place to give a fresh and beautiful start to the upcoming trekking journey.

Once we start the journey, trekkers can experience gradual changes in the landscape, settlements, and the entire lifestyle of the people. Moreover, you also get a chance to explore the peaceful and calm side of the country. As this place is near to the Himalayas, we can also get spectacular views of different snow-covered peaks once we reach Dhunche.

Trekkers will spend a night in a cozy and comfortable hotel in Dhunche that offers proper food and facilities. However, we also encourage the trekkers to interact with the locals and explore the area before having dinner.

Kathmandu Altitude: 1400 meters

Dhunche Altitude: 1960 meters

Time Taken: 7-8 hours drive

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Accommodation: Hotel / Guesthouse / Teahouse
  • Place: Dhunche
  • Altitude: 1400m

From Dhunche, we start the actual trekking journey and on the second day, we start the walk immediately after breakfast. The trek begins with a decent ascend towards Deurali that arrives after we walk for about 2 hours. This is a beautifully settled village at an altitude of 2500 meters and also comprises a few tea houses.

This part of the 5 Day Gosaikunda Lake Trek passes through pristine streams and waterfalls. After three more hours of walking and the trekkers reach another checkpoint of the day, Dhimsa. located at an altitude of 2900 meters. This place consists of traditionally settled houses and locals living a peaceful lifestyle. From there, we need to walk through a slightly difficult trail that passes through lush pine forest finally taking us to Chandanbari after a steep and slightly difficult ascend.

Dunche Altitude: 1960 meters

Chandanbari Altitude: 3330 meters

Time Taken: 6 - 7 hours trek

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
  • Accommodation: Hotel / Guesthouse / Teahouse
  • Place: Chandanbari

As this is a 5 day package, we will reach the top-most destination on the third day of the trekking commencement. Today, the trekkers will wake up early in the morning, have their breakfast, and then begin their walk to one of the holiest lakes of Nepal. We need to walk for about 5 to 6 hours to reach Chandanbari to Gosaikunda, which means that the trekkers will have enough time to explore the lake and its area.

One thing that the trekkers must remember is that this section of the Gosaikunda Lake 5 Day Trek is comparatively more challenging than any other section. As we ascend above the altitude of 3000 meters, the risk of altitude increases. Moreover, at such a higher altitude, the trail is also not well-developed causing a little discomfort and difficulty to the trekkers.

However, once you reach the Gosaikunda Lake Area after walking for 5 to 6 hours on such a difficult route, what you see will starstruck you for sure. Be prepared to witness the magical and serene water of the Gosaikunda Lake, surrounded by the eye-soothing views of the snow-covered peaks like Langtang Lirung(7234m), Langtang Ri(7205m), Manaslu(8163m) and Ganesh Himal(7422m). These mountains also become your friends on this section of the Gosaikunda Lake Trek 5 Day Itinerary.

Did you know that before witnessing the mighty Gosaikunda Lake, you also get a chance to explore two more lakes: Saraswati Kunda, and Bhairav Kunda? These lakes are about half an hour away from the last checkpoint before the Gosaikunda Lake Area, Lauribinayak (3900 meters). After witnessing the holy Gosaikunda Lake, trekkers will have dinner before sleeping in a tea house at Gosaikunda.

Time Taken: 5 - 6 hours trek

  • Accommodation: Hotel / Guesthouse / Teahouse
  • Place: Gosaikunda

We hope that you loved the Gosaikunda area and enjoyed the ascending trek a lot. However, on the fourth day, we start the descending journey, making our way from Gosaikunda straight to Dhunche. As it is a descending journey, it does not take much for the trekkers to descend from 4380 meters to 1960 meters above the sea level. Within a few hours of walk, we reach Dhunche which is the starting point of the Gosaikunda Lake Trek.

As we will cover such long distance in a single day, trekkers certainly get tired and exhausted and might not have the energy to return to Kathmandu on the same day. Therefore, on the fourth day, Adventure Bound arranges stay and dinner for the trekkers in a hotel, guesthouse, or teahouse in Dhunche.

In the 5 Day Gosaikunda Lake Trek, trekkers ascend to an altitude of 4380 meters. This altitude is higher than the altitude sickness-prone altitude, which is 2500 meters to 3000 meters. Therefore, the potential risk of altitude sickness does exist in the Gosaikunda Lake Trek map. Moreover, there are different reasons why altitude sickness can happen to the trekkers.

In most of the cases, it is due to lower endurance capacity, not following the safety guides, and rushing (faster pace). Trekkers must be aware of their physical fitness while ascending to such a high altitude. Besides these reasons, dehydration also invites altitude sickness during the Gosaikunda Lake 5 Day Trek itinerary.

Here are a few ways to reduce the risk of altitude sickness while ascending to the Gosaikunda Lake:

  • Train your body with endurance capacity to stay fit even at higher altitudes.
  • Listen to and follow the safety instructions provided by the guide.
  • We suggest trekkers hire a porter for the trek as they can carry the load and you can ascend freely.
  • Drink an adequate amount of water throughout the Gosaikunda Lake 5 Day Trek and keep eating energy bars and snacks.
  • Avoid rushing on the trail. We suggest trekkers keep a slow and steady pace rather than a faster pace.
  • If you have a feeling of headache, nausea, vomiting, weakness, etc (symptoms of altitude sickness), talk to the guide as soon as possible.
  • Know and take care of your body's capacity while ascending the trek.
  • To keep yourself acclimatized, ascend a little higher and sleep and little lower every day.

Factors Affecting the 5 Day Gosaikunda Lake Trek Journey

Gosaikunda Lake Trekking is one of the trekkers' favorite trekking trail, especially due to its religious importance. People from different countries following both Hinduism and Buddhism visit this holy lake at 4380 meters every year. Besides, this route also has its name because of the mind-blowing trail, beautifully settled villages, and peaceful and welcoming locals of this area.

However, there still are some factors that affect the route of the 5 Day Gosaikunda Lake Trek and they are:

Best Seasons to Go for the Trek

One of the major factors affecting your ascend to the Gosaikunda Lake Trek is the season you choose. Spring season (March to May) and Autumn season (mid September to November) are the ideal seasons for the Gosaikunda Lake Trek ascend. During these seasons, the trail is filled with greenery, pleasant weather, and climatic conditions, and trekkers can also walk under a clear sky. Moreover, due to clean environment, we also get spectacular vistas of the nearby mountains.

However, in these seasons trekkers must be aware of and ready to face extreme temperatures, obstacles, rain, and difficulties in finding proper accommodation. We do organize the Gosaikunda Lake Trek package throughout the month. However, choosing the best season as per your ability depends on the trekkers themselves.

Festivals in Gosaikunda Region

Gosaikunda Lake Region is famous as one of the holy places in Nepal. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva created the Gosaikunda Lake by piercing a glacier with his trident. He did so to quench his thirst after drinking poison to stop the war between Gods and Devils. Because of this reason, Hindus have strong religious beliefs in Gosaikunda Lake.

Most of the Hindus visit Gosaikunda Lake during August. This is because August is the month when Janai Purnima is celebrated. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of August. Therefore, if you go for the Gosaikunda Lake Trek in August, you will experience a higher number of people on the trail. Therefore, the festival season also impacts the 5 Day Gosaikunda Lake Trek.
