About Mardi Himal Trekking

Nepal is a trekker’s paradise. There are dozens of trekking routes all over Nepal, ranging from easy to extremely difficult. Mardi Himal trek is a hidden treasure that has been a choice of very few trekkers over the years. It is a peaceful trekking path with very few trekkers along the way.

Campers trekked the Mardi Himal unofficially for a long time. The trek route was officially opened in 2011. Few tea houses and guest houses have since opened, but they provide only basic facilities. It is an overlooked trekking route in Nepal that offers stunning views of the Annapurna region, Machhapuchhre Himal, and Himchuli.

Mardi Himal is located at the east of the famous Annapurna Base Camp. The trek is relatively short and comfortable as compared to other trekking routes in Nepal. The trail moves along the ridge and gradually ascents with the highest elevation of 4500m at the Mardi Himal Base Camp. Mardi Himal trek is one of the least travelled trekking routes in Nepal. It is also a low trekking path with the maximum elevation being 4500m.

You can enjoy the quiet trails in all its glory with alpine forests, villages and the valley, terraced farms and rivers. The exciting aspect the Mardi Himal trek is that the path has an alternate way from the base camp. You will not need to backtrack the same terrain.  The first choice of trekking in Nepal has always been the Everest base camp. However, the Annapurna region of Nepal is equally beautiful and adventurous if not more.

The Mardi Himal Trek in the Annapurna region is ideal for those trekkers who want quiet trekking atmosphere. We offer this awesome trek at a reasonable price. Come and get refreshed in the tranquillity of nature. Here are the detailed itineraries.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek

As with all the trekking routes in Nepal, the best season to trek the Mardi Himal is the spring and the autumn season. The months of March, April and May fall under this season. The spring season comes with crystal clear skies and unobstructed views of the mountain range. The weather is warmer in the day time and cooler in the mornings and nights. You will see the rhododendron blooming in the forest.

The autumn months of September, October, and November is also considered as the best time to trek. The autumn season sees the most breathtaking sunrise and sunset on the clear sky. The weather is generally clear and stable. However, you might see some scattered rainfalls.
Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

The difficulty level of the Mardi Himal trek is easy to moderate. The treks are short but gradually ascending with the highest point being 4500m in the Mardi Himal base camp. However, the hike from high camp to Mardi Himal base camp is a long and challenging. We walk via narrow path and steep slopes. The altitude is relatively lower, so the altitude sickness might not be a huge problem.

The trail being new is not that developed. The route is not marked clearly, so there is a chance of getting lost. You are advised to trek in a group, if you are trekking solo you are advised to hire a guide. The tea houses are few, so you need to book in advance. The other most important thing is to carry drinking water to stay hydrated as there are not many tea houses or guest houses along the way.

Our representative will pick you up at the arrival at the Airport and transfer you to your hotel for your check-in. We will brief you in detail about your trip ahead.

On day 2, we will travel to the city of lakes Pokhara on a tourist coach. The drive through the Prithvi highway is scenic where you can view the beautiful terraced farmed hills along the lines of Trishuli river. Pokhara is a charming town known for its exuberant nightlife. You can see the serene views of the Machhapuchhre Himal, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri. You will stay overnight at the hotel.

We start our trek by driving to Kande from Pokhara for about an hour. We trek to a ridge at 2060m for 1 and 1/2 hours. The trail then leads us to the lodge settlement known as “Australian camp”. You can see the panoramic view of the Annapurna Manaslu range from the camp. The trail then ascends to the mountain pass amidst the rhododendron forests known as “Deurali”. The Deurali pass overlooks the Modi Khola valley between Annapurna south and Mardi Himal.

We resume our main trail to follow the forested ridge to forest camp. The scenic uphill route passes through the rhododendron forests. The trail is relatively new, and there are not many tea houses hence a sufficient amount of lunch snacks and drinking water should be taken along. After reaching the forest camp, we will set up our tents and stay overnight.

The trail today is a gradual climb through rhododendron forests. The three-hour trek passes through the trees covered with moss, lichen and fern. The view of Machhapuchhre Himal and Mardi Himal is splendid on the backdrop of a clear blue sky. We will set up our tents to stay overnight at the Low camp.

The trek to high camp starts after breakfast from low camp. We will trek for 3-4 hours on this day. We will pass through the Mardi ridge which has the magnificent view of the Machhapuchhre Himal, Annapurna south and the Himchuli mountain. The tree lines will get thinner as you move on with the trail and you will mostly find shrubs with rhododendron bushes.

You can spot the Danphe pheasant, which is the national bird of Nepal on the rhododendron bushes. We reach the high camp after a trek of 3-4 hours. High camp is a small pasture with magnificent views of the mountains. We stay overnight at high camp.

The trail to Mardi Base Camp is quite challenging. There are lots of uneven rocky climbs and descents. The first lap of 2 hours will take you to a ridge marked as Mardi Base Camp. However, we will need another 2 hours of a steep climb to reach the real Mardi Base Camp. The last leg of the climb is quite steep and slippery. Hence, you need to be extra careful on this specific trek. We will explore the exotic flora and fauna all along the way.

A wide vista of Himalayan mountains like Mardi Himal (5,587m), Annapurna (8,091m), Singhachuli (6,501m), Machhapuchhre(6,993m) can be seen in a close-up view. We make our descent back to high camp where we stay overnight.

The trek back from high camp to Sidhing is slippery and steep. There is an alternate way that is longer than the first route. The alternative route passes from high camp instead of going back to Mardi Himal. Sidhing is a quiet junction as it is away from the busier trails.

From siding you walk out to the road head at Lwang. The trail descends steeply to the Gurung village of Lwang. We pass through Rhododendron and Apple forests along the way. The village of Lwang is a self-sufficient village with Gurung heritage and culture. You will get to enjoy the lifestyle. From Lwang transfer to pokhara.

From Pokhara, we drive back to Kathmandu, enjoying the Riverbank scenery. If you have one more day, Pokhara sightseeing is a recommended thing to do along with the boating in fewa Lake. Then, transfer to the hotel and take a rest. Overnight at hotel.

Our staff will take you to the Airport, and you can board the flight to your desired destination.
